Improved PA66 materials offer performance benefits to automakers, builders, food processors

Executives from Ascend Performance Materials today held a press briefing in Antwerp in advance of K 2016, the plastics industry’s largest tradeshow. Executives discussed the role of Vydyne® PA66 in addressing global trends impacting today’s world, such as calls for decreased carbon emissions, population growth, and poverty.

Ascend, one of the world’s largest integrated producers of Vydyne® PA66, manufactures PA66 (nylon 66) resin used in automotive cooling systems, interior and exterior systems, powertrain and underhood components. The company is also one of the leading providers of nylon 66 fiber to the airbag and tire cord industries. The company will exhibit at K 2016 in Dusseldorf, Germany, in October.

“Our Vydyne® PA66 compounds and resins are at the cutting edge of improving fuel economy in automobiles, conserving energy in buildings and increasing the shelf life of food,” said Ascend’s chief technology officer, Vikram Gopal. “At Ascend, we’re working to help our customers solve some of the biggest problems facing the modern world.”

Gopal and Ascend’s EMEA commercial director John Saunders spoke about PA66 in relation to the following macro trends:

  • Carbon emissions: Vydyne® PA66 and powertrain improvements – As much as 70% of fuel economy can be derived from powertrain improvements. Ascend has introduced several new Vydyne® PA66 products specifically for under-the-hood and cooling systems, including grades with superior hydrolysis and high-temperature resistance.
  • Carbon emissions: Vydyne® PA66 and automotive lightweighting – Vydyne® PA66 is suitable for the molding of complex, thin-walled parts required in sophisticated automobile systems. By replacing cast metal with lighter PA66 material, automakers can make vehicles more fuel efficient.
  • Population growth: Vydyne® PA66 and sustainable building materials – Most of the heat lost or gained by a building comes from the building’s window frames and door frames. Ascend’s glass-filled Vydyne® PA66 polymer is used in thermal breaks in window frames to increase insulation. In addition, the strength and durability of PA66 make it a smart choice for internal building material such as carpet since it results in longer wear and lifespan.
  • World hunger: Vydyne® PA66 and food accessibility – When used in film packaging, Vydyne® PA66 offers higher temperature and puncture resistance than other materials, keeping food fresher longer. PA66 also offers a simpler construction, requiring only three layers of PA66 to be combined with ethyl vinyl alcohol (EVOH) compared to five layers of PET (polyethylene terephthalate).
