Chocolate Bayou wins three safety awards at Texas Chemical Council conference

Ascend Performance Materials’ Chocolate Bayou plant has earned three notable awards from the Texas Chemical Council for its commitment to workplace and community safety in 2014.

On June 4, the plant received the Distinguished Safety Service and Zero Contractor Incident Rate awards, as well as one of the top Caring for Texas awards. Ascend competes with more than 500 chemical companies – facilities with more than 500 employees and contractors – for these awards.

The Caring for Texas awards recognize companies that achieved exemplary results and demonstrated strong commitment to their employees and their community in emergency response, security and pollution prevention. The Caring for Texas award Chocolate Bayou received recognizes companies that stood out in the judges’ minds for excellence.

Lynda Green, Chocolate Bayou’s senior ESSH manager, accepted the awards during the council’s annual Environmental, Safety and Health conference held this year in Galveston.

“I’m very pleased that the efforts of every Chocolate Bayou employee are recognized and celebrated by these awards,” Green said. “I am extremely proud to be a part of the Ascend CHB site.”

The Distinguished Safety Service Award recognizes companies that showed improvement in their injury and illness incident rate in 2014, when compared to the previous three years. The Total Recordable Incident Rate is the number of OSHA recordable injuries per 100 fulltime employees. Last year, Chocolate Bayou's TRIR was 0.31, which was far below 0.69, the average of peer companies.

By ending the year with zero contractor recordable injuries, Ascend was the only company in its peer group to be honored with the coveted Zero Contractor Incident Rate Award. No facility in the category with more than 500 employees and contractors received the award in 2013.

“These awards demonstrate the power of making safety personal for every person at our plant,” Green said.

Green also credits several programs for helping the plant maintain zero contractor injuries. For example, there is the contractor’s safety forum, which is a monthly meeting that engages all resident contractors in Ascend’s safety culture. The plant also has an active OSHA Voluntary Protection Program team, which embodies the commitment at every level of the organization to maintain high standards. In addition, the plant’s 100-plus volunteer Emergency Response Team plays a major role in safety, she said.
