Ascend Cares Greenwood team donates backpacks to local students

Ascend’s Greenwood team, with assistance from the Ascend Cares Foundation, helped more than 400 local students return to school with new backpacks stuffed with school supplies.

About 40 team members handed out 432 backpacks to first- and second-graders at an annual school supply drive sponsored by the United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville counties in South Carolina.

Ascend Cares purchased the backpacks and Greenwood team members generously donated the school supplies. Numerous team members also volunteered to unload school supplies and stuff backpacks during their lunch break as part of the Stuff the Book Bags event coordinated by Greenwood’s community relations team. Some team members later delivered the backpacks to the United Way site.

Excited children and their parents began lining up outside at the United Way at 6:30 a.m. – three and half hours before the event was scheduled to start. By the end of the event, a total of 1,700 backpacks were given to children in kindergarten through 12th grades.

Ascend is committed to supporting the communities in which we operate. Answering the call to help meet the increased need for backpacks was one of many ways Ascend team members, with support of Ascend Cares, make a difference.

The Ascend Cares Foundation was established to help Ascend team members during times of hardship. The foundation’s key focus areas include education, hunger, housing, military support and children’s health and safety. It is governed and funded by Ascend employees whose donations are matched dollar for dollar by the company.
