Ascend Decatur team members get muddy for charity

Ascend team members at our Decatur plant recently got dirty for a good cause, participating in the 27th annual CASA Mud Volleyball Tournament in Athens, Alabama.

On July 18, the Decatur SLT volleyball team splashed around in mud soaked fields to support Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound, also known as CASA of Limestone County.

The nonprofit helps elderly and disabled people maintain their independence so they can continue living on their own. It provides free services, including wheelchair ramps, transportation to medical appointments and minor home repairs.

“This was the first year for the Decatur site to participate,” said Demetrius Peoples, leader of the plant’s health and wellness committee. “This was a fun-filled community event for people of all ages to have fun, get dirty and support a great cause.”

The event organizers are still tallying how much was raised from this year’s tournament, but last year’s tournament raised about $18,000 for CASA, they said.

The tournament attracted more than 70 teams for a day of round robin volleyball. Each team played a minimum of seven games with the top teams from each pool advancing to tournament play. Each participant paid a $20 entry fee to help support CASA.
